Opera Memphis

Songwriting Program

SONGWRITING PROGRAM

Sponsored by ArtsMemphis and private donors, Opera Memphis conducts an award-winning songwriting program that allows classes up to 20 students to write and record their own original song in 8 hour long sessions followed by a 2 hour recording session at a professional recording studio. Students begin with an idea, adding characters and melody, to create a complete song.  The process includes creative writing, storytelling and a strong emphasis on working with others.  Participants may choose a novel or specific period in history which connects the process to established curriculum and to an opera in the Opera Memphis season.  Includes a performance by the Opera Memphis Artists-in-Residence.

Dates: August 2011 – May 2012
Location: Public and Private Schools in Shelby County
Cost: $1,600 (8 hour long long sessions + 2 hour recording session + 1 OPERA TO GO performance)
Grades: 6 – 12
