Education: Songwriting Program

SONGWRITING PROGRAM

Sponsored by ArtsMemphis and private donors, Opera Memphis conducts an award-winning songwriting program that allows classes up to 20 students to write and record their own original song. Participants may choose a novel or specific period in history which connects the process to established curriculum. Students begin with an idea, adding characters and melody, to create a complete song. After assigning solo verses and rehearsing, the students record the song at a professional recording studio. The process includes creative writing and a strong emphasis on working with others. For an additional fee, students may also work with local videographers to conceptualize, storyboard, schedule and film a professional-level music video. Every effort is made to present the final product at a school-wide assembly.
