Education: Artist-in-Residence Tours

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE TOUR

Through a partnership with the University of Memphis Artist Diploma Program and through a generous grant from the Jensen Foundation, the Artists-in-Residence are bringing the public three programs in the spring of 2011.

THE MAGIC FLUTE

The touring production of THE MAGIC FLUTE is a reduction of the singspiel (opera with spoken dialogue) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Meet fairy tale characters like the silly, loveable bird-man Papageno, the beautiful yet power hungry Queen of the Night and the not so brave Prince Tamino from a far away land. Follow the story of Tamino on his quest sent by the Queen of the Night to save Pamina from Sarastro. Instead of rescuing her from the “evil” tyrant who is actually a wise priest, Tamino rescues her from an annoying stalker Monostatos. Sarastro requires Tamino to prove his love for Pamina by undertaking trials of willpower, patience and trust. With a fairy tale ending, the opera is full of fascinating objects with magic powers and Egyptian mystery! Opera Memphis will provide a study guide with information on student participation in the performance.
