Midtown Opera Festival 2019
April 6-14, 2019 at Playhouse on the square
Opera Memphis’ seventh annual MIDTOWN OPERA FESTIVAL is coming to Playhouse on the Square April 6-14, 2019. The Festival is anchored by the premiere performances of The Falling and the Rising, a new American opera composed by Zach Redler and written by Jerre Dye. This opera will be preceded by an Opera Prelude Talk, providing insight into the story, characters, and music we'll experience. After the opera, the audience is invited to join us for an exclusive Q&A with the creators of The Falling and the Rising, a drink in the Festival Lounge, or head to one of the many Festival Fringe Events.
Surrounding the operas, we've curated a world of additional events - Festival Fringe Events - that are designed to deepen your experience, highlight something new, or expand the definition of what an opera festival can be. This year, the Fringe Event calendar features performances by the Memphis Symphony Orchestra; Military Cabarets by the Military Chorus featured in The Falling and the Rising; Mozart's The Magic Flute - our featured community partner event at the University of Memphis; Opera Takes Flight, in which aerialists perform to opera's greatest hits; the ever-popular family event Cartoons & Cereal, featuring new and classic cartoons that introduced generations to the sound of opera; and many more exciting events!
Full Festival Schedule
Each opera is preceded by an Opera Prelude Talk 45 minutes before the performance in the Festival Lounge, providing insight into the story, characters, and music. After the opera, the audience is invited to the Festival Lounge for a drink or to catch one of the many Festival Fringe Events.

This new American opera chronicles the imagined journey of a soldier suspended inside a coma after a roadside attack on her convoy. We follow her as she makes her way through a dreamscape punctuated by powerful encounters with other fellow service members. Together they must find clarity, consciousness, and communal hope. Created from compiled interviews with returning soldiers at Walter Reed National Medical Center, Arlington Cemetery, and Fort Meade, The Falling and the Rising is an inspirational story of service, sacrifice, and connection inside uncertainty. Composed by Zach Redler, written by Jerre Dye, and conceived by Sgt. Ben Hilgert.
