It is the evening of April 3, 1968. Mister John, elevator operator at the Sears Crosstown Building, has just been promoted. As he trains his replacement, he remembers his father, whose example allowed him to become the man he is.
Movin' Up in the World premiered as a part of the Ghosts of Crosstown project in 2014. In 2018, it was brought back as a featured opera in the Midtown Opera Festival and was directed by innaugural McCleave Fellow Dennis Whitehead Darling and performed by Darren Stokes. This season it is revived as the featured opera of 30 Days of Opera 2018, once again directed by Darling and performed by Stokes.
