In a whimsical new operatic setting, The Ugly Duckling provides an engaging introduction to how words and music work together to tell a story. Written by Andrew Duncan and Steven Malone, the opera is based on three popular fairy tales – The Ugly Duckling, Little Red Riding Hood, and The Three Little Pigs. The character of the Ugly Duckling is different from everyone else. Not only does she look different, but she enjoys things like reading and problem solving that the other ducklings look down on. When her differences give her the ability to save the day, though, all the other ducks - and even the Big Bad Wolf! - begin to see her and each other in a different light. As the characters say, “We’ve learned to love what makes us special; we’re each unique in our own way; accepting difference in ourselves and others is the lesson we’ve learned today.”
The opera will be performed by a quartet of Opera Memphis' most talented local singers - the same people you see on our stage! Opera Memphis will provide a study guide.
