About the OPERAS
Join Opera Memphis at Germantown Performing Arts Center for a Puccini Double Bill featuring performances of Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. A company premiere, Suor Angelica follows the story of young Sister Angelica, who is rumored to have been sent to the convent as a punishment for some terrible deed. Her hard won peace is shattered by the arrival of her aunt, whose obsession with the past may destroy Angelica's future. The second piece, Gianni Schicchi, is Puccini's only comedy, though its most loved aria, "O mio babbino caro" is at least somewhat serious. An extremely Italian dish made of equal parts love and deceit, the opera is based on portions of Dante's Divine Comedy. Family patriarch Buoso Donati has died, and his "loving" relatives look forward to inherting his vast wealth. When they discover that the deceased left his entire fortune and earthly possessions to a local monastery, there is only one man in Florence who can help them cheat and connive their way out of poverty--the incomparable Gianni Schicchi!
